LAYERED IN LOVE

PHOTOGRAPHED BY: DANIEL ORTIZ AND SONYA SELLERS

Nestled amongst a string of traditional homes in West University, this contemporary new build home is a bold ode to the future. With two young children, our busy professional clients needed more space but wanted a home that reflected their modern style.

A spacious entry welcomes you in to an expansive open plan kitchen, dining and living space, accented by American Walnut flooring with a clear matte finish, a wall of sliding doors and matte black minimalist light fixtures. In the kitchen, we selected a mixture of matte black and high gloss white laminate cabinetry that’s punctuated by eye-catching mirrored glass and walnut accents. Large scale black and white abstract tile provides a striking balance to the dark base cabinets. A cluster of repurposed cardboard globe pendants hang above the monumental island capped by black and white quartz slab to polish off the captivating space. Peeking through a slatted walnut partition, separating the stairs from the living room are three Tom Dixon flush mount marble fixtures that draw your eye up to the wall to staggered floating shelves. Bookshelves were high on this client’s must have list so we added hidden shelving to artfully display more of their collection and a reading nook for their daughters at the end of the hallway with a floating window seat and articulating sconces. In the primary bathroom, we chose a bold glossy teal tile accented by gold plumbing and lighting fixtures. We accented the large-scale porcelain terrazzo with a brushed gold edging and a customized random pattern of angled cuts using the same metal detail to create movement in the flooring. Custom rift cut white oak cabinetry in a light stain is balanced by matte black metal legs, hardware and plumbing fixtures for contrast. Each vanity features a pair of stacked mirrors with black and gold edging and a unique angular design that echoes the floor design.Despite the neutral finish palette throughout the home, we incorporated bold accents to reflect the vitality that defines this active family.
