WHIMSICAL WARMTH

PHOTOGRAPHED BY: STEVEN CHEN

We created a modern and inviting kitchen for this young family to host family and friends. The concept included an emphasis on natural materials such as wood and stone combined with durable engineered quartz countertops. The hood vent features a custom wood slat design which is echoed in the adjoining family room fireplace surround. Stained oak reeded cabinets lend a furniture look to the prep and dining island in this dual design. A collaboration between designer, builder, carpenter and stone fabricator resulted in the realization of the unique slab design at the corners as the slab continues to the floor and overlays the reeded woodwork. The dining island has LED lighting on all four sides in a channel under the countertop giving it a beautiful glow atop the limestone floor. Magnesium metallic accents the cabinet hardware and hood vent without commanding attention. Gold tones are used sparingly to highlight the sink faucet and sconce light fixtures. The open plan room with 12’ tall ceilings provided the perfect opportunity to showcase a large sculptural light fixture over the dining island which has seating for 6 with upholstery accents in hand dipped velvet in a traditional link motif from Uzbekistan. Additional seating can accommodate up to 10 for entertaining. The accessories represent global design and craftsmanship from Cameroon, Morocco, as well as original artwork and found objects from nature.

Since the owners are a young family with children, their wish for a space dedicated to play resulted in a colorful retreat near the kitchen where parents can keep a watchful eye. This fun space serves as the perfect setting to host playdates that utilize both indoor and outdoor areas with doors to the expansive terrace and lawn. The wall of custom designed cabinetry serves for quick clean up and storage of toys. A custom designed tackable acoustic felt wall features the children’s art creations, photos and found objects. The space has comfortable seating for adults and plenty of open space for play. The playful lighted swing serves both purposes by rounding out the conversation area and amusing adults and children alike. The family cat who has a dedicated wall for climbing up to the top of the cabinetry so he can keep an eye on action. The random arrangement of 21 paper lantern pendants lends a cloud-like feeling of wonder and relaxation. The room includes a custom designed area rug created with durable carpet tiles with a kinetic design and colorful combination of lime and tangerine. A Swedish designed wood wall track carries toy cars and balls over hills and valleys while the cat lounges on a hammock above.
